“I wanted to make Coming Out because as a gay man I never had to come out like others did. This was a small question I wanted to pose to people who have, or have been affected by someone coming out. I wanted to use this film as a connection to that rite of passage for gay people. For some the rite of passage was about falling in love in our teenage years, but for others it was the intense feelings surrounding one’s coming out.”
We had met Mart through our previous short film, Sibling, so when he approached us with the idea to make a short documentary addressing the curiosity and anxiety of 'coming out', and how various gay people faced this rite of passage, we were more than happy to pick up a camera and help.
We spent one day on the streets of Melbourne and well-known gay bars approaching and asking people, with some trepidation, to share their personal experiences with us. But the trepidation was unwarranted; people were happy to open up, and everyone had a unique story to tell.
The result is a heart-felt and very human documentary about being true to yourself and letting everyone know who you really are.
